Thanks to advances in dental technology, patients and dentists no longer need to wait for dental crowns to be sent, produced, and delivered by an off-site laboratory.
Same day crown procedures at Don Sing DDS mean patients can receive dental crowns as part of a scheduled visit, or during a routine checkup without delay or hassle, allowing them to keep all dental services in-house, saving both time and money.
Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?
You may require a dental crown if you have a large cavity that cannot be corrected with a filling, have a missing tooth and require a bridge, have a dental implant, a cracked tooth, have had a root canal procedure, or have a discolored or badly shaped tooth.
How Are Crowns Made?
Dental crowns are made from several different types of materials, including ceramic, porcelain, resin, metallic alloys, or a combination of each. In making a crown, a dental professional will make an impression of a patient’s teeth in order to match the specific shape and size of the tooth in question.
Traditionally, this imprint will be taken and sent to a dental lab so the crown could be produced, but thanks to our state of the art technology, crowns can be created in-house on the same day.
When the crown is acquired, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing the outer portion, removing any decay that may exist along with the portion of the tooth.
The prepared surface of the tooth is used to anchor the crown and the dentist will apply cement in order to make a bond with the tooth. It may take a few attempts to adjust the crown so that it fits comfortably with the rest of your teeth, but once corrections are made, the crown is placed over the tooth and cemented in place.
Caring for Crowns
Patients with crowns should ideally experience no change in their bite, smile, or day-to-day feeling. However, crowned teeth have been known to be more sensitive than natural teeth, so avoiding ice, hard foods, and chewing on hard objects while you get used to the crown is advised.
